Vietnam stretches more than 1,600 km from end to end, which creates a fascinating variety of climates. Contrary to what you might think, there is not just one “good season” to visit the country: when one region is under rain, another is often bathed in sunshine.

1. The North

This region has four distinct seasons, a feature unique in Southeast Asia.

  • Winter (December to February): It can be surprisingly cold (between 10°C and 15°C in Hanoi, sometimes below 0°C in the mountains of Sapa). The sky is often grey and misty.

  • Spring (March to April): This is the ideal time. The weather is mild, flowers are in bloom, and it is the perfect moment to explore the lush green landscapes.

  • Summer (May to August): Hot and humid, with sudden but brief tropical downpours. Temperatures can climb to 35°C–38°C.

  • Autumn (September to November): A magnificent season with clear blue skies and cool temperatures, much loved by photographers.

2. The Centre

The climate of the Centre is marked by a seasonal shift compared with the rest of the country.

  • Dry season (January to August): Beautiful, warm weather. This is the ideal time to enjoy the beaches of Da Nang and the historic charm of Hoi An.

  • Rainy season (September to December): Heavy rainfall can occur, sometimes accompanied by typhoons. Flooding is possible in Hoi An around October and November.

3. The South

The South has a constant tropical climate with two main seasons. Temperatures stay high all year round, usually ranging between 25°C and 35°C.

  • Dry season (November to April): Maximum sunshine and low humidity. This is the peak tourist season, perfect for cruises on the Mekong or lazing around on Phu Quoc.

  • Rainy season (May to October): Humidity rises. The rains are generally heavy but last only an hour or two in the late afternoon, cooling the air.
